Revisited March 2009

Visited the Wykeham Arms in Winchester for a short lunch.  Rather quaint inside with lots of genuine memorabilia about Churchill, Nelson and other British Greats.
I had the Homemade Steak and Kidney Pie which was full of meat and my fellow diner had the Lamb Casserole which again was generous with the meat.  Both tasted very nice and were well presented.
To follow I had their Banofee Pie which appeared to be homemade with fresh bananas on top.
The staff were friendly and attentive and I would not hesitate to eat there again.

Happy to leave the marking as below and VERY happy to be able to give a good report after their recent negative publicity; The Wykeham Arms is one of Hampshire's gems!

Amazingly we have never visited the famous Wykeham Arms before so I used the excuse of a visiting American friend to take the opportunity to rectify this omission.  It is an ancient hostelry that has been in existence for some 250 years and is obviously a very popular venue for many people who work in the area, for example lawyers from the nearby courts, schoolmasters from the nearby college and most probably clergymen from the nearby Cathedral!

I love the atmosphere, lots of nooks and crannies encompassing many different dining areas and with so much "stuff" to look at!  It took us ages to make our choices from the varied menu and the daily specials board as we were so distracted studying the bric a brac. You can even choose to sit at old school desks which sadly I can actually remember using similar ones at school..... in fact they may even have come from my old school, Winchester County High for Girls!

In the end we chose from the specials board, a delicious Wykeham Cottage Pie £6.50 and the Panfried Salmon Supreme with Crushed New Potatoes, Wilted Spinach and Creamy Fish Velouté Sauce £8.95.  As we were about to start our sightseeing tour of Winchester this, along with a drink each upon arrival, was all we had on this visit but we will be back as it was an interesting menu.

The staff are young, enthusiastic and very polite, as it was very busy so I would recommend booking.

The higher the "Yummy" factor, the better the food & service.  The higher the number of £ signs the more expensive.  ( Roughly one £ sign = £5 per head )
