Revisited May 2008

Just a quick update on this recent find!  I had to meet two friends at Gunwharf today and as the sun was shining suggested outside at Waterfront Brasserie.   Their lunchtime specials menu is now 2 courses for £9.95 and 3 courses for £11.95 so slightly cheaper than back in March!   We all agreed the food was great, good value and their staff are very friendly and attentive.  As mentioned before the restaurant is upstairs so the views are better and away from the crowds down below!  We had 2 courses with wine, followed by coffee and so, including service came to £20 per head.   My previous scoring unaltered!  Report SM.

Visited March 2008

We decided to venture down to Gunwharf for lunch and a little shopping as one does on a very wet and windy day!   We decided to lunch first as the weather was so terrible and found The Waterfront Brasserie on the upper level.  (They have a map on their website).  One can imagine on a Summer day sitting outside, enjoying the wonderful view, far superior than on the lower level and not so crowded!  However we obviously sat inside.  The interior is very smart, the main feature being a central circular bar so then we imagined being sat around it enjoying exotic cocktails!  The Brasserie seats around 80 covers and has been well designed for enjoying at all times of the day.

The staff are friendly and accommodating (special mention to Mel & Turi), there was no problem when I asked for a slightly higher chair.  I am not comfortable sitting too low at a table, probably a back and age thing! (I expect they would have been willing to help me up onto one of the elegant bar stools as well if I had needed it!).

There is a set lunch time menu of 2 courses for £10.95 and 3 for £12.95.  Very good value in view of the size of the portions.  We decided to go mad and choose from the a la carte, starting with a warm crispy duck on mixed salad £5.75, stuffed pimento with spiced vegetables and aioli £5.25 and mozzarella and artichoke foccacia with soft boiled egg and pesto dressing £6.25.  All were tasty, well presented and as I mentioned earlier good sized portions.

Our main course choices, rump of lamb with spiced cous cous and salsa verdi £13.75, pork fillet wrapped in bacon, potato cake and whole grain mustard £13.50,  fillet of sea bream on a bed of crushed new potatoes with a prawn and caper butter £12.75. Everyone enjoyed!  Needless to say we were all full but as per usual for the purposes of research we had a pudding of pear and almond tart with ice cream £4.50.  Our pudding expert thought it was yummy but for me it was a little too stodgy, I preferred sticking to the wine, a very enjoyable  Pinot Grigio Rose £18.50, just right for lunch time.  We finished with coffees.

For those who have not been to Gunwharf before it is so well worth a visit even if you are not interested in shopping; there is the Spinnaker Tower and the Historic Dockyard area to explore as well just enjoying the atmosphere.  There is a huge underground parking area and lifts to get to the levels above.  In fact as the Waterfront is on the Upper Level we specifically asked about access for wheelchairs and there are two.  A lift near the Cinema and one near the Spinnaker Tower.

We thought The Waterfront Brasserie was a great find, its been open a year now and for a wet day they were doing good business. The  lovely mellow jazz music in the background added to the atmosphere.  They open at 11.30am, last orders 11.00 pm Monday to Saturday and 10.30pm on Sundays.
