Saltys is only open Thursday to Sunday at this time of the year and we were almost the only ones in there! We had pre-booked the Fruits De Mer at £25 each. It was really filling and much enjoyed by all 5 of us so including chips and bread price come out at £125 - it didn't last long even though we had half a lobster, half a crab, about 4 or 5 oysters, mussels, king prawns, crevettes, brown shrimps and anchovies each! We have been trying to organise lunch at Saltys with a great friend of ours & of LWL who lives in Brockenhurst for ages. She loves Saltys and wanted us to enjoy the heritage train trip from there to Lymington and then the ferry from Lymington to Yarmouth. To ensure none of us were driving we even caught the train from Southampton so of course it turned into quite a boozy day! Our first delight was discovering that the ferry serves double gins in the same mini bottles as the airlines! The next pleasure was meeting some fans of LWL on the ferry.... I wonder how they realised it was us?? Because of the fun conversation the time on the ferry went very quickly so we soon arrived in Yarmouth where after a little retail therapy we entered Saltys. There is a bar downstairs where they also serve food but we had booked in the upstairs restaurant which has a nautical theme, lots of artefacts on the walls to enjoy.
Sadly there was only one girl on duty upstairs who was not only the waitress but also running the bar so once a large party of about 20 arrived she was rather overwhelmed with so many drinks to pour. I have still given a 3/5 for service because she was very efficient and very friendly, it was not her fault she had too much to do. We eventually got our wine and made our choices.

None of us felt like starters so we went straight to the mains. Two of us chose Saltys famous beer battered cod and chips, I have never seen such enormous pieces of cod, see top photo!! It was delicious and so were the chips. The 2 healthier members of our party chose Pan Fried Halibut with cucumber tagliatelle, crème fraiche and poached oysters and Turbot bourguignon, shallots, panchetta, thyme, garlic and red wine. They chose a tomato salad to accompany. The mains range in price from £18 - £12.50, the cod was £13.00 so it is possible to eat at Saltys for a lot less than we paid ...... if you don't drink! We finished with one Chef's own Crème Brullée and coffees. It was a fun lunch.
