It was an exciting occasion, the first time we have all been together (plus 2 extras) since the various summer events that have kept us apart.

We agreed to meet at The Royal Oak, a convenient midway spot & we wanted to try it since its major re-furb.  First impressions... the decor is lovely, it must have cost a fortune & ladies the loo is gorgeous as well!

Unfortunately the service & food rather let down the surroundings.  It was not busy, they weren't rushed but still we did not receive a very warm welcome from the waitress or the girl behind the bar.

As regulars will know we all drink gin & tonic & we always moan when bar staff pour all the tonic in the glass!  We strongly feel they should just put a drop in & then allow you to top up as required.   We sat in the bar area but our order was not taken until we got to our table.

The menu looks interesting plus they have a specials board.  Two chose soup of the day Cauliflower & Italian Cheese, two Seared Scallops with Palma Ham (on right) & I chose a Salmon, Goats Cheese & Basil Tart (on left), both specials.  They were fine but I received a Red Onion & Goats Cheese Tart, they apologised for the mistake, said they would knock it off the bill but then didn't.

We had 2 bottles of a very palatable & reasonably priced House White.

Two of us decided on Pan Fried Liver, unfortunately mine was very dry & I found the accompanying potato cake & onion gravy quite salty but S enjoyed hers.  CV had her usual choice of fish, fresh Plaice with Prawns, from the specials & said it was OK. Another choice was a Classic Caesar Salad, fine. SM went vegetarian & had a Stack of Warm Aubergine, Mozzarella, Tomato & Basil & the last choice was Traditional Homecooked Ham & Eggs.  It was all presented well, looked pretty but none of us were madly enthusiastic about the flavours.

Thank God for the pudding, a Brownie with Vanilla Ice Cream & also two of us had Honeycomb Ice Creams, They were yummy!

We will try again at some time in the future because their sister restaurant Maine in Lymington is fab so perhaps this was just a bad day at The Royal Oak!
