Revisited again (!) June 2005
Re-visited on Saturday night - as usual very
busy, booking essential. All enjoyed our meal, only slight moan was
mussels enjoyed by 2 were on the small side. In view of this have left rating
at 7/!0. The view is still fabulous and with the company of 5 merry
sailors singing rugby songs a good evening was had by all. Report by SM.
Visited October 2003 & Updated
November 2003
I actually wanted to take my house guest from
"up North" to The Jolly Sailor as he remembered it from the Eighties
series of Howard's Way and it's wonderful views of the Hamble River .
Unfortunately we discovered that it's closed for some 5 months for a
major refurbishment. I hope it does not loose it's individual charm!
I shall let you all know of course!.
Anyway fortunately we remembered that we had not
visited the Gaff Rigger since it's change of name, ownership, and refurb and
were very pleased with the outcome. The restaurant/bar is upstairs,
& now looking so much more attractive, which means that the views of the
upper Hamble River are superb. For all those yatchties out there it is
the ideal place! We sat in the Conservatory and having placed our
order at the bar with a charming young man,( sorry, cant guarantee he's always
around!) we sipped a bottle of house, reasonably priced at £9.95 whilst
taking in the wonderful panoramic view.
We enjoyed a snack lunch of Fried Jacket Wedges
with goats cheese and cranberry, 2 Baguettes of duo hams and mozzarella, and 1
Baguette of prawn and dill in Marie rose sauce. All generous portions
and priced at £4.95 each. The lunch menu is available Mon-Sat 12.00pm -
2.30pm. Sun 12.00pm - 6.00pm. Their main menu is also available at lunch
times. Too busy talking to remember to check it out so very remiss of
me. It would be a lovely setting for dinner.
You don't have to own a boat to go here, it's
just great to pretend that you do!
Update, Dinner
I was invited to this great bar/restaurant for
dinner last Friday and as we have only reported on lunchtime food am
now letting you know the delights it has to offer for dinner.
There is a menu with a good varied
choice together with a Specials printed menu. We started with potato
skins with a cheese and bacon topping, deep fried whitebait and fish cake
with chilli sauce. To follow two chose pan fried scallops in
lemon & garlic butter served with salad and brown bread. This was
on the Specials menu along with an oven baked chicken supreme nesting in
pumpkin mash with a Jack Daniels, wholegrain mustard & cream sauce.
Lastly a sea bass in an orange sauce. All served with vegetables and
new potatoes and all delicious.
We had no room for desserts but had some
excellent coffee. Together with a glugable Pinot Grigiot and some
beers our bill totalled just under £90 for 4 of us.
Good job we booked a table it was very busy!!
Their Xmas Menu starts from 1st December, 3
courses (good choices), plus coffee and mince pies for £19.95 per head
looks really good value.
