So pleased a friend recommended us to try Maggie Jones, great atmosphere & even at lunch time candle lit & cosy.  See pics above.  Looks more like a country pub, long bare wooden tables, faded & peeling kitchen chairs, various large baskets & containers hanging from ceiling, massive orchids!  Don't think the decor has changed since this restaurant serving good English grub opened in 1963!  It is named after Princess Margaret who, along with her husband Anthony Armstrong Jones, was a frequent diner.

They have a great, & dangerous, way of serving their house wine, you get a magnum (cost £23) but only pay for what you drink!  Of course we (three) managed to finish it!!  We generally thought the lunch time prices very reasonable but noticed some of the dishes were double the cost in the evening.

Whilst considering our order we were offered, twice, massive basket of wonderful nutty bread.  Starters.... Maggie's Tart of the Day , very generous portion, it was spinach& almond. Roquette Salad with Sautéed Oyster Mushrooms & shaved Parmesan.  Avocado & Crab Salad.  All delicious, favourite being the mushroom salad.  Next....Creamed Fish Pie, Smoked Salmon & Crab Parcel, & Liver, Bacon & Mushrooms.  Again all very successful & enjoyable choices but favourite the liver.  All served with a choice of vegetables, one of which was a lovely creamy mixture of swede & parsnip (we think!).  No room for puds, just coffees.  Also running out of time as we were off to a matinee.

Staff very friendly & efficient, really enjoyed our visit & hope to return soon!
