Even the snow couldn't keep three of us from visiting the recently revamped Little Chef; ever since the TV programme charting Heston Blumenthal's input we have been dying of curiosity and couldn't wait to see it for ourselves.  To make sure we got a table we arrived at 11.30am, we needn't have worried, plenty of space but it was a snowy day.  The staff are very friendly and good fun especially Reuben (top pic) and the superstar from the TV prog Barry (bottom pic), they obviously enjoy their celebrity status.  Eventually we told them we were doing a review, didn't think that they could do much to change the dishes but we did get spoilt with extra Jelly Beans when we left!  We noted that Jo from the programme was busy cooking but sadly Michael the manager was off sick.  Sure you will be interested to know that they said the filming was fun and that Heston Blumenthal is a great guy.  They also told us that when they first opened people were waiting up to 2 hours for a table!

starter Scottish Mussels £4.95

Fish & chunky Chips £9.45 Braised Ox Cheeks£9.75 All New Olympic Breakfast £6.95

Two of us shared a Garlic Bread to start with and SM enjoyed the mussels.  They were served in an unusual oval iron dish with mesh basket for the empty shells.  An enjoyable gimmicky touch, the finger bowl was served with what looked like an Alka Seltzer sized tablet but once floated in the water it swelled to a flannel!  The Mains: Chunky chips are well worth the extra charge, fish and batter delicious, another fun gimmick, being misted with the smell of the chip shop! Ox cheeks were very tender but really needed some greenery to break up the richness of the sauce.  The final choice of the Olympic breakfast was a tad disappointing, delicious sausages and black pudding, the rest a bit dry.  I wish now I had tried the Hereford Steak & Abbot Ale pie.  Sadly they had run out of both the trifle and the choc fondue but the two puds we had were delicious and loved the popping candy, hadn't enjoyed that for years, very tingly!  We had a glass of wine each, very reasonably priced @ £3.20 and coffees.

We will go again if we are passing and recommend that you give it a try, we just hope that once all the hoo-hah dies down they keep up the enthusiastic and friendly service, the fun factor and of course the standard of the food.
