Visited March 2008

The late lamented Maine has been given a new lease of life by Peter and Nicola Leyland-Jones (Peter is the chef and Nicola front of house) and is now Lanes.

Two of us visited Lanes on a dreary Monday lunchtime. The lunch menu looked interesting - 2 courses for £12.50.  Peter recommended a starter of Seafood Gratin which was delicious. We followed with Fillet of Sea Bass served with seared spinach, mange tout, buttered carrots and saffron potatoes, and a tasty white wine and  tomato sauce - beautifully cooked and served.   I chose the Fillet of Beef served with stuffed tomato, chateau potato, cabbage and a sauce of truffled Madeira jus. Delicious!

The "sweets" were given a miss as we were quite satisfied with our gins and tonics and two savoury courses, so we just settled for coffees. Our total bill for 2 was £44.00

Also there are choices of light bites approx £7 and a daily special.  They have a Sunday lunch menu, 2 courses £15.00, 3 courses £18.00 .

We found Lanes to be a friendly welcoming restaurant and definitely worth seeking out. We wish Peter & Nicola well with their new venture.
