We were together again for a bit of a celebration - hey it’s nearly December!   Head down the one way system in Hamble and The Bugle is on the right before the 'hard' where there is ample parking - not free I'm afraid!  We were met by Laurent, the manager, who made us feel very welcome. The pub is simple, rustic with welcoming log fires and the restaurant area is only small so booking is advisable.

Whilst deciding on what to order from an excellent and varied menu we enjoyed our usual G & T's…. not perfect, as regulars to our site know we like to add our own tonic!  Do look at their web site for opening hours and full details of the menu.

There are some interesting courses, Small Plates, for example at £4 each or 3 for £10, a great idea with a glass of wine for a lite lunch!  So from a choice of 6 we chose 4 for 3 of us to share.… 'Arinchini' cheese stuffed risotto balls (v), Devilled whitebait & a great home made chunky tartar sauce, Seasonal vegetable tempura with chilli jam (v) and would you believe ‘Naked Baker’ artisan breads with Pratt's oil and olives (v).  From a choice of 8 starters, CJ decided on Rosary goat's cheese and Sunnyfields tomato tart, £5, it was one of the best any of us had tasted!

I

We enjoyed a Chateau D'Astros Rosé Cotes de Provence @ £20.25, pale in colour but dry and delicious.  The Wine List is good and Laurent, being French, obviously enjoys his wines, he holds wine tasting evenings - again see their web site.

Our Main courses were chosen from a good selection of 10 on the menu and several on a Daily Specials chalk board.  First from the daily specials was a large Flounder cooked in caper butter with new potatoes £13.  Selected from the menu, a large pot of Moules and skinny chips £9.50,  a very scrummy Smoked Haddock fish cake with watercress sauce and skinny chips £10 and finally a slow roasted free range Hampshire pork belly with champ, leeks & cider gravy.  SA declared it the best pork belly she had ever tasted and it was especially delicious as the crackling was,,,. well very crackly, £12.50!

All portions for both courses were generous, well presented and because we were decidedly stuffed we only had one dessert with four spoons!  From a choice of 5 desserts, all at £5, we chose the Chocolate nemesis & clotted cream, delicious and very rich but eaten with lovely strong black coffee to drink it was excellent.  We were very tempted by the bread and butter pudding from the Specials Board but having seen the size of the portion on a nearby table we thought better of it.

Our Chef on the day was a very talented young lady, Keren Taim-Ailward, who obviously loves her job, as she manages to juggle work with two young children.  Her food is some of the best we have tasted.

After a delicious lunch you could take a walk down to the River Hamble where there is always something going on or take a ride on the Pink Ferry across to Warsash; we of course didn’t do either as on this particular day it decided to rain…. never mind the fact that we were so full!!
