Up date...Visited The Star at East Tytherley on Sun 7th November 2009 on a cold November lunchtime. The Star is out in the sticks a bit to the North West of Romsey, but the drive was pretty and only took 30 mins from Ringwood.

We were greeted by two roaring fires(see photo)and a freindly face behind the bar. Peggy asked for a Mug of hot water which was no trouble at all. We grabbed a couple of Sunday papers and sank down into comfy leather armchairs near one of the fires to enjoy our drinks and tresure the moment.

Eventually we turned to the menu and chose the fish medley (Gin Soaked Smoked Salmon, Smoked Makerel, Prawn and Dill dressing) and the Liver Parfait with chutney and Tosted Soda bread, followed by the Roast Beef. Both starters were delicious.

Dining room was cosy seating about 30 (see photo) or you could choose to eat in the bar. Service was friendly and attentive. Tables had fresh flowers and jugs of tap water as standard.

We both had the Roast Beef. Delicious again, generous portion of beef, crisp and fluffy Yorshire Pud, Crisp and tasty roast potatoes, accompanied by Kayle, Red cabbage and cauliflower. Only criticism would be that the meat was on the rare side (and not mentioned) and all the food was served on the plate at the same time. Personally prefer vegetables in a side dish or to share.

Finished by sharing a Pannetone bread and butter pudding with apricot Coulis, followed by coffees. Total cost including a large glass of house wine and a St Clements was £45.

Overall a very pleasant dining experience. We will be back.  Guest Report T.H. £££££

JUNE 2007 Two of us visited here ahead of an afternoon visit to Mottisfont to view the roses at their peak (http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-vh/w-visits/w-findaplace/w-mottisfont/). The Star Inn is well off the beaten track and yet only 15 minutes from Romsey. It is easy to find (directions on website) despite seeming to be unsure whether it is in Lockerley or East Tytherley!

The 17th century traditional coaching inn has been family run (Alan, Lesley and chef son Justin) for the past 18 months and offers accommodation and private dining, alongside good quality food and cask conditioned real ales. We were struck by how spotlessly clean everything was and the smoke free environment (introduced well ahead of legislation) certainly helps to provide a good environment for enjoying a meal.

Many food guides recognise The Star Inn with entries featured in the Good Food Guide, the Good Pub Guide, AA Best Pubs & Inns Guide and AA Restaurant Guide.  The menus (see website for lunch/supper samples) combine the traditional elements of good food with a modern twist and the emphasis is always on local seasonal ingredients cooked to order.

We started with “Gin cured salmon, crème fraiche and dill dressing” and “Goats cheese & red onion parcel, walnut dressing” – these were both of the very highest order - DELICIOUS. The mains of “Savoury bread & butter pudding, roast red pepper coulis” and “Barnsley lamb chop, shallot mash, Savoy cabbage, mint jelly” were not as spectacular but very good nonetheless. As we relaxed outside in the warm sunshine we finished off by sharing a trio of ice creams (earl grey, vanilla, and orange & cardamom) presented in a lovely decorated ice bowl.

The inn was extremely quiet the Friday lunchtime that we visited (maybe because the Queen was touring Romsey at the same time?), although we were assured that business is generally brisker in the evenings. To summarise, this is an eatery well worthy of support: family run; maintaining high standards; serving good quality food. We look forward to returning one evening to sample the supper fare and the atmosphere generated by the locals, or a Sunday afternoon to sup a pint of ale whilst watching village cricket on the beautiful field behind. CHEERS!
