LWL Bronze Award - Awarded October 2010 - Cost £££

Four of us decided to meet up at The Fighting Cocks on a gloriously sunny autumn day; the drive through the New Forest to get there was a delight… who needs New England in the fall??

The pub was very busy presumably because of the combination of the weather and half term or perhaps it’s always as popular.  They certainly serve massive plates of pub grub and all of it looked very appetising.

Luckily we arrived quite early and were able to get a table by a window with forest views; some hardy folks were even sitting outside on the large patio!  It’s a large pub full of bric a brac and because of the time of  year they even had a very large witch hung from the ceiling, she cackled every time you went past,  I bet she’ll have been strangled by the irritated staff before Halloween!

It’s a large menu and an equally large specials board.  You order your food and if you want to start a tab you have to leave your credit card, always worrying but once the place got so busy you can understand why they do it.

The staff are very friendly and helpful but we only gave them a 3/5 as you have to queue to order.  One choice from the menu Ham, egg & chips, £8.95, and three from the specials board: an 8ozs Rump steak served with fried onions & mushrooms, £10.95, Homemade chicken, chorizo, prawn & smoked sausage Jambalaya, £9.95 and Smoked Gammon with egg & pineapple £9.95.  All were served with a choice of potatoes… chips, jacket or new.  They were happy to substitute salad for potato (I was being unusually good!).  All the food was fine but we didn’t like the plates piled quite so high!

We shared a bottle of Rosé and finished with coffees. Cost just over £££

It’s a great family pub, they also welcome muddy boots and well behaved dogs on leads in the bar area.  They even have a “homemade sausage for Fido £1.50” on the menu!

Ladies Who Lunch Scoring:

Quality of food 3/5
Variety of menu 4/5
Staff and service 3/5
Ambience, setting & decor 3/5
Value for Money 3/5

Total Yummy Factor

16/25

Report: CJ

5/5 = Cannot be improved upon, 4/5 = Very good, 3/5 = Good,
2/5 = Satisfactory, 1/5 = Poor, 0/5 = Terrible

The higher the "Yummy" factor, the better the food & service. The higher the number of £ signs the more expensive. (Roughly one £ sign = £5 per head)
