LWL Bronze Award - Awarded September 2007 - Cost £££££

We decided it was about time we visited the Emsworth food festival and whilst there to try Fat Olives for lunch.  As we anticipated that the restaurant would be very busy at this time we booked a couple of months in advance and then called the week before to confirm.  On neither occasion were we told that there would be a special inclusive menu for the food festival which consisted entirely of fish, we thought it very strange not to have at least one meat choice readily available.  The specials boards were still displayed but it was obvious they did not want us to order from them.  We were told that a meat dish was available as a special order for anyone who could not eat fish!

Fat Olives is a charming little restaurant with beautifully presented tables, they have a pretty courtyard for sunny days.  The service is very efficient but a tad aloof! Our G&T's were served perfectly and naturally we were given a dish of gorgeous Fat Olives to enjoy whilst we made our choices.

2 chose the Smoked Mackerel Paté with toasted Pumpkin Seed Bread, another the Grilled Skate & Lemon Caper & Parsley Salad and I chose Pan Fried Squid with Shaved Fennel & Chilli Oil.

Our mains, Grey Mullet with Du Puy Lentils & Mushrooms & Red Wine Sauce, Cod with Samphire & Mussel Saffron Sauce and Salmon with Crushed Peas, Pancetta & Pea Velouté.  All main courses included a selection of vegetables and new potatoes.

In spite of the earlier gripes we enjoyed our food and the glass of Rosé that was included in the price of £19.95 for 2 courses.  No puds, we finished with coffees as we had noted lots of sweet things on sale at the food festival we wanted to try!
