We were very happy to be invited to the re-launch of The Dining Room at Marwell Hotel, near Winchester and next to the famous Zoo, on the 27th January 2011. The evening started with champagne and delicious canapés served in the lounge bar area and then we were shown to our table in the relaxed and friendly restaurant that is “The Dining Room”. Dinner started with an amuse bouche of Mrs Tee's wild mushroom glazed Rosary goat's cheese, a really lovely light beginning to our 5 course meal; it was served with a selection of four different breads. Our starters were organic salmon hot and cold -hot piece of salmon and cold salmon with celeriac and apple or butternut squash soup caramelised apple and parsnip. As an accompaniment Cyril Sequin, the Sommelier, recommended a Sauvignon Blanc with the salmon and Semillon Chardonnay with the soup. It was obvious Cyril was very knowledgeable and we just knew his wine choices were going to be enjoyed! For a palate cleansing intercourse we were offered an interesting and unusual mix of beetroot textures, Carpaccio, air, granite, sorbet and chutney. |

| The main courses choices were - saddle of fallow deer 'Wellington’, parsnip mash, winter greens, sloe gin sauce, (the wine choice for the deer was a Californian Shiraz Cabernet), poached fillet of turbot, saffron potatoes, bouillabaisse, rouille sauce,(wine choice Pinot Grigio) and open saffron lasagne, with winter vegetables, cherry tomato sauce, (wine choice a Chilean Merlot). And then it was pudding time! Our choices were apple and pear tart tatin with Jude's vanilla ice cream, ginger and quince syrup, accompanied by a Late Harvest pudding wine from Chile. At this point I would like to say Jude's ice cream is truly scrumptious which was just as well as we had just met Alex from Jude's Ice Creams! The second pudding also included Jude's Ice cream, this time chocolate with 75% Tarakin dark chocolate tart and Jania white chocolate truffle. With this the wine choice was Sauterne, still a lovely pudding wine! To complete this wonderful banquet we were given a selection of Hampshire Cheeses, Tunworth, Lyburn's Winchester, Barkham Blue, Rosary goat's cheese with accompaniments of celery, grapes and chutney, together with Fine Ruby Port. Coffee, tea and crafted chocolates were served to finish. Cost guide ££££££ Throughout this dinner we were very impressed with the attentive service from all the staff. The resident manager Oliver Bastian should congratulate himself on running an excellent establishment. The Dining Room seats around 70 and the hotel has 68 bedrooms. It is well known for functions, weddings and conferences and we are confident that the restaurant, although only open in the evenings at present, will prove a hit in the future.
