29/3/2012  Sorry to report just heard The Wheatsheaf has closed.

May 2011 As this pub is almost on JI’s doorstep we decided  to revisit along with SA.  We wanted to meet Matt, he’s an Aussie and have had  fun exchanging Tweets. (Any Tweeters out there follow us, he’s @TheSheafRomsey we are @theladiesuk). We had a starter to share, a Tapas board with crostinis and very nice it was too. Our mains, fish & chips (description below), Local seafood escabeche, pickled vegetable salad, Jersey royals and The Wheatsheaf homemade burger, toasted ciabatta and fries.  We enjoyed a bottle of dry Rosé. We agree with all SM’s remarks below especially that Matt needs more help!

April 2011 It’s a long time since we visited this pub and as its now under new ownership I was very pleased when a girlfriend invited me to join her, along with 8 others, at the
Wheatsheaf, to celebrate her birthday.

There were nine starters all priced around the £6.00 but we all went straight to the main courses! From the lunchtime menu on the 12th April, we enjoyed the following: Hampshire Beer battered fish, triple cooked chips and minted pea puree £10.50. Fresh egg tagliatelle, spinach, pine nuts and parmesan £9.50, Trio of local lamb, roast cocotte & purple sprouting broccoli £13.50, seared fillet of sea bass, scallops, butternut squash puree, wilted spinach & saffron cocotte £13.50. Two ladies had slightly larger portions of grilled salmon from the starters at £9.50. We all enjoyed our food particularly the trio of lamb; sweetbreads should have been included in this dish but the ladies asked if they could be excluded and were delighted to be given an extra cutlet! Unfortunately some of the plates were cold but on the whole good sized portions but we all agreed that a set menu of two courses for a main course price would have been a good idea.

The Desserts consisting of five to choose from were £6.00 each and only one was chosen, a chocolate brownie, chocolate sauce with pistachio ice cream, very yummy. The wines were chosen and paid for by the birthday girl, so the food bill, incluidng coffee, shared between us came to £££ plus tip.

Matthew, who was doing everything bar the cooking, on the day, looked after us very well; we felt sorry for him and think some extra help would be an asset.

It’s an excellent refurbishment with very good loos and parking!  There is a great garden which is child and dog friendly… Matthew was even finding time to provide dogs with water bowls!

Opening times: Mon - Thurs 9 - 3 and 6 – 11 and all day Fri, Sat and Sun.
