December 2011 The Jetty, has won the Taste of South West Award category for the South West Tourism Excellence Awards 2011-2012

November 2011

We actually went out after dark last Friday! SM & I took our beloveds out to dinner to one of our favourite venues, the rather super Jetty.

The reason for our choice was the latest newsletter from Alex Aitken advertising his “ad hoc” evenings... fun, simple, affordable... Alex chooses great produce for some new dishes or old favourites & creates a four course menu... AJ chooses a glass of some very quaffable wine, all for just £25! Click here to sign up to be advised of the next event.

The restaurant looks lovely at night time; very atmospheric with low lighting, very kind for ladies of a certain age! To complete the picture the external flood lights lit up a family of swans swimming past as we sat at our window table.

Both Alex & AJ greeted us as they did everyone in this very busy restaurant. Alex was keen to discuss the menu and AJ the wine, of course AJ persuaded us to try a few more glasses of wine matched to the courses!

Our menu: Jetty surf and turf, Cockles mussels prawns chunks of chicken in turmeric sauce
~~~~~
Whole sea bass to share baked in a salt crust served with a caper sauce, olive oil mash, & autumn salad
~~~~~
Isle of Wight blue cheese with walnut salad
~~~~~
Limencello crème brulee
It was all delicious and particularly the main course; it looked as if Alex was bringing a giant baguette to the table but then he carved off the top of the salt to reveal the most succulent and flavoursome sea bass. The accompaniments were simple but helped to make the fish very special. The chicken in the surf and turf was like butter and the turmeric sauce was wonderful mopped up by chunks of their gorgeous homemade bread. It was a delightful dinner and we not surprised that The Jetty has become such a success story!
You can see all the other available menus online. Don't forget to book! Cost £££££££
 November 2010 The unusual and impressive timber building that is The Jetty is situated in the grounds of the Christchurch Harbour Hotel.  It is right at the waters edge with outstanding views across the harbour to Mudeford Spit and Hengistbury Head; on a sunny day they’d be described as superb!  The Jetty is definitely on the list for next years al fresco dining.
The interior is modern light and airy.  It is the new venture for Michelin starred chef Alex Aitken; he rules the kitchen and the restaurant is now under the auspices of his son AJ (ex Whitely Ridge & Simply Poussin), it's a family affair!
We were warmly greeted by Alex, it was good to see him again and judging by his interaction with other diners we weren’t the only ones who had followed him to enjoy his “good honest food”.
AJ showed us to a great window table which also afforded us a view of the inner workings of the kitchen; it’s good to watch Chef in his domain!  We had a choice of 3 menus:  A la Carte, The Jetty Specials and the one we made most of our choices from, The Seasonal “Local Produce” menu, 1 course £12.50, 2 £17.50 and 3 £21.50 (this menu is also available 6.30 – 7.30 Mon – Thurs).
An amuse bouche of celery soup was served and I mustn’t forget to mention the home made breads; the caraway with sea salt & rosemary is divine.
Alex is a famous forager so I had to choose the wild hedgehog mushrooms he'd found in the New Forest served with spinach & egg on toast as my starter… delicious!  The others had Mudeford crab on toast, twice baked creamy cheese soufflé and SM chose from The Specials menu tiger prawns & chorizo cooked in garlic butter with rocket, yum yum!
Mains: Bream fillet with a fabulous tomato tart tatin, chicken breast with sweet potato, sprouts, chestnuts & bacon with a red wine sauce, fish pie with lettuce heart salad, and bayette steak & chips, the chips were stunning!  (Their steak and some of the fish is cooked on a “josper” charcoal oven grill).
The food is fabulous, very flavoursome with discreet presentation; we all enjoyed our dishes very much but if pushed we’d say the mushrooms and the bream were the favourites.  We finished with a selection of scrumptious puds (Jetty trifle, Chocolate fondant pudding, Tiramisu) and coffee.
AJ’s offer to choose us wines to accompany each dish was very welcome and a nice change from our usual compromise of Rosé!
The Jetty is open 7 days a week, Monday - Saturday: lunch 12 noon - 2.30pm and dinner 6.30pm - 10.00pm Sunday: 12 noon to 8.00pm.  We highly recommend that you try The Jetty for yourself and as it was busy on a wet and windy Wednesday suggest you book!
The cost for 3 courses plus 2 glasses of wine was a very reasonable ££££££ a head.
Good news…  Alex & AJ are offering a free glass of wine for LWL Card Holders plus up to 3 guests when everyone has a lunch of at least 2 courses on every day, all day.
