| Devon & Dorset, eating in The West Country |
|
A Taste (or in LWL speak a Big Bite) of The West Country! This is a report by SM of eating places mainly around the South Coast of Devon, Summer 2010 We started our boat trip in Brixham where we ate at The Berry Head Hotel which has wonderful views over Torquay Bay. The food is very good, a lovely place for lunch and dinner… enjoy the sunset! The Beach House Café which is lower down also has good sunset views and a nice menu. The only trouble, not much sun to watch during the first few days of our trip so we ventured by carto Paignton ate at The Palace Hotel, delightful conservatory and good food. The next day we went to the Dolphin Inn in Newton Ferres, great views over the river and again good food! (Not doing much boating but enjoying loads of food!). On Brixham Quay at The Poop Deck we enjoyed fresh fish… very large portions! (It’s small upstairs so need to book.) We also had a good lunch at The Brixham Yacht Club. The next leg of the trip took us to Salcombe. We tied up on the visitors remote pontoon so relied on a dingy to get us to food and drink! A lovely lunch at The Salcombe Yacht Club overlooking small yachts racing in the river. For dinner we went to The Kings Arms. The next day we took a dingy trip up Frogmore Creek and had a superb Sunday roast at The Globe. On Monday we set our course for Plymouth and tied up in Queen Anne Battery which has a delightful café called Sound Bites. I would recommend it for a great breakfast. We had a very good dinner at the Barbican Kitchen next to The Plymouth Gin Factory. Chandlers Bar & Bistro on the marina has a good menu and not too far to walk. Our last port of call was Weymouth Dorset. We had a lovely lunch at The Chatsworth. On our first evening we ate at Vaughan’s on Custom House Quay, good food and value for money. For our last meal in Weymouth we visited Mallams Restaurant on the opposite side of the quay, excellent cocktails! The food was delicious and we would return to both these restaurants. And that was the end of our trip, we returned home stones heavier and £££££ lighter!!! |
