LWL Gold Award - Awarded November 2009 - Cost £££££

We last visited Les Mirabelles seven years ago so as we had heard on the grapevine that they are now offering a two course menu for £17.50 decided it was about time for a revisit!

It was a lovely sunny day, perfect for a drive through the forest.  On arrival it was easy to park opposite the attractive building which resembles a private cottage.  Lots of walkers use this area but realised that a lot of the cars belonged to diners; Les Mirabelles was busy so as it is off the beaten track it obviously has a loyal following… always a good sign!

Once we entered and having been warmly greeted at the door we were delighted with the interior; modern décor, sludgy colours and luxurious curtains.  We had a lovely forest view from our window table.  The pleasure continued when we were served perfect G & T’s, something that we had had an issue with on our last visit (we like separate bottles of tonics) and then were presented with the menu.  Such a choice!

The two courses for £17.50 (3 for £19.50) menu is available for lunch Tuesday – Saturday and for dinner Tuesday – Thursday.  The A la Carte is always available.  We chose from the former.

There is a wonderful variety of choices, six starters and four mains plus there is a chalk board with supplementary choices (to the A la Carte) of daily specials offered by the chef depending on the fresh produce available.

I chose the Goat’s Cheese, nicoise vegetables and pistou crumble, I loved the combination of the cheese and crumble.  JI chose a special… La Crêpe aux Champignons, the mushrooms were hand picked from the forest!  Delicious and such a generous portion.  Our mains choices were Pork medallions with Calvados  sauce and the Rib Eye steak served with green pepper sauce.  The meat was so succulent, cooked to perfection and the sauces were full of flavour… and no doubt calories!  It was pleasing not to be charged extra for bread or the accompanying fresh vegetables (mange tout, jacket potatoes and red cabbage) a practice that we highly disapprove of!

As usual we were full but still chose one pud between us…. note it is only an extra £2 to enjoy a dessert!  Our choice which was so creamy but still very refreshing was Passion fruit mousse.

Guy Baxter the chef came out to greet diners, we were delighted to be able to congratulate him on his delicious food.

Claude the owner has an amazing wine list but along with the more expensive bottles are listed some very reasonably priced house wines.  We just had a large glass each @ £4.50.  (Claude told us they are opening for 5 Sunday lunches before Christmas, Nov 22/29 Dec 6/13/20th)  Booking recommended.

And we mustn’t forget our young waiter, he was attentive and friendly.

To sum up Les Mirabelles is a delightful venue serving delicious food, we highly recommend!  Cost £££££
