Last Thursday at long last I got to visit the Christmas market in Winchester; sadly it must have been the wettest and windiest day of the year! However once we set foot in the Old Vine I did begin to feel Christmassy. There is a warm glow to the place. It was very busy and as I can now see why everyone kept urging us to try it, strongly recommend booking. It was packed but we only had to wait 5 minutes for our table and several times we were assured we wouldn’t have to wait much longer. Once sat at our table we really relaxed and enjoyed prompt and attentive service. (In other words we got our much needed bottle of NZ Pinot Gris (£18) in no time at all!).
There is plenty to choose from on the menu and on the daily specials menu; how lovely to have a print off of the specials instead of having to get up to read (& promptly forget everything on it) a board.
My choices, pictured, were Salad of beetroot & spinach with honey & mustard dressing, Rosary’s goat’s cheese & walnuts (simple but really delicious) and then the Home-made pie of the day: Hampshire steak, Ringwood ale & mushroom with a cheesy mash top, served with steamed peas & chantenay carrots. It was also delicious and contained a very generous amount of tender steak. Two of the others also chose this as their main. JI had Creamy smoked haddock bake with spinach, carrots & béchamel sauce with dill, topped with cheese, served with peas & new potatoes. The other starter choices were Crispy baby squid rings in light breadcrumb, sweet chili dipping sauce, Warm leek, gruyere & Parmesan cheese tart and Home-made Hampshire pork, apricot & Spanish chorizo terrine. After two lovely courses we were replete so finished with coffees. We’ll definitely go again as we really enjoyed the food and considering it was so busy were very impressed with the service. Thank you to all of you who recommended, we totally agree! Cost £££££
