This is my first review since returning from OZ so it’s nice to be back in the swing of lunching again. Two of us heard that Porterhouse opened 6 weeks ago in Winchester so we decided it was an ideal spot for our reunion. Porterhouse, as the name suggests, specialises in steaks using only the finest Argentinian beef 100% grass fed and naturally reared. The décor is lovely and not all butch and garish as in most steakhouses! Love the look of both the exterior and the interior; my favourite sludgy colours along with some serious statement wallpaper, comfy black leather chairs and wood flooring. We were greeted by the very friendly Sam and shown to a window table; on the way we passed the open kitchen and saw chef Bimal hard at work. I do love this fashion for open kitchens, no nasty secrets hidden from us diners! |

| The Day Time Menu (available 12.00 noon – 6.0pm) has plenty to satisfy every appetite as it includes 12 starters which could also be ordered as a light bite and 11 mains. The mains include substantial steaks but also an 8ozs Porterhouse Burger, we saw someone being served one and it looked delicious plus a few pasta dishes and a steak sandwich. The Mixed Platter for 2 caught our eye for a starter and we were happy with our choice. It included tiger prawns, Cajun chicken wings, Chicken skewer, Crab cake & BBQ spare ribs. For mains I chose the 8ozs Rib Eye Steak which was served with a selection of roasted vegetables, freshly made chips and a choice of the two sauces of the day, pepper corn and diane. It was very tender, cut like butter and cooked exactly as I had requested, medium rare. Chips were great as well but think the sauces could have been a tad stronger in flavour. JI decided on a House Special from the a la carte menu, Butcher’s Skewer, marinated aged beef cuts skewered with peppers and mushrooms flame grilled with their unique house baste. The meat was also very tender and flavoursome. Apparently one of their most popular dishes is the 32ozs Porterhouse steak for 2; the chef will come and carve it at the table if you are having trouble coping with it! Having enjoyed a starter as well as a generous main course we could not manage a pud even for research purposes but they did look good and include cheese cakes, chocolate brownies and ice creams. During lunch we enjoyed a large glass of Rosé @ £4.25 each and finished with coffees. Before we left we met Pradeep who oversees Porterhouse. He and chef Bimal were both working in Dubai at one time in a similar restaurant so they have brought their expertise to Winchester to start this new venture. If you want a good steak then we recommend you head for Porterhouse!
