It’s on the top floor of The Mayflower but there is a lift! It was buzzing and I’m not surprised as the food is excellent. Eating in elegant surroundings whilst anticipating the enjoyment of a show is a very special treat however as Ovation is now open Tuesdays – Saturdays you can use it as you would any other favourite restaurant, not just for pre theatre. The décor is sophisticated and comfortable but as it was so busy a little noisy; have to admit the diners were mostly female, perhaps that had something to do with the noise levels! We ordered a bottle of Pinot Grigio Rosé £18.95 whilst making our choices from a small but interesting menu. Our starters: Confit shoulder of pork, granary bread, apple sauce and pork scratchings £5.95, Warm goats cheese, crisp filo, sun blushed tomatoes, tomato and vodka jelly, pine nuts £6.50, Smoked chicken, bacon and stilton salad, port syrup £6.50. Our mains: Ovation’s seasonal dish of the day which was Chicken, mushroom and bacon pie served with cabbage, carrots, mange tout & new potatoes £9.95, Roasted chicken salad, mango, coriander, crème fraîche, chilli croutons £9.95 and Smoked salmon and crayfish salad, lemon dressing, granary croutons £10.95. We were very impressed with the food; delicious flavours and delightful presentation. I was particularly impressed with the perfectly cooked fresh vegetables with my chicken pie. I commented recently on perfect chips, they, like perfect vegetables are rare! Most of the portions were very generous (like the salads) and so along with the sandwiches on offer would make a delicious snack lunch. We were seated fairly near the kitchen entrance and have to say that all the dishes passing by looked very appetising. To finish we ordered and shared Ovation’s trio of desserts £7.50 which included a chocolate parfait with orange ice cream, sticky toffee pudding and a pineapple Eton mess, yummeeee, particularly the combination of orange ice cream & chocolate. You must check out their website for all the restaurant events, Faulty Towers sounds like fun. They are now open Tues – Sat for lunch from 12 – 2 and for dinner from 5.0pm. Cost £££££ Ovation is in our Discount Directory and is offering one FREE BOTTLE HOUSE WINE for every booking of 2 diners including one Discount Card Holder. Subject to availability.
