The Tollhouse Inn has only very recently re-opened after a fire in July 2011. The new owners are Michael and Michelle Rogers who also own The Waterloo Arms in Lyndhurst and The Plough Inn in Tiptoe. Their new interior is impressive; we loved the décor especially the large vaulted bar area. There is a large open fire; we just wished it had been roaring when we arrived as it was a cold day! Anyway once we had warmed up a bit we began to enjoy our surroundings and a chat with the manager Kevin. Of course we started with G&T’s whilst deciding what to eat from a varied menu and the specials board. We chose a Pinot Grigio Rosé at £12.95 to accompany our lunch.
To start with I had a dish of Forest Mushrooms with a cream sauce and the other three chose some warming soup, French Onion and Tomato. They were served with warm bread. Only one main course choice from the menu: Toulouse Sausages served with white truffle infused mash, seasonal vegetables & red wine gravy £10.95. From the specials board: Confit of duck with parmentier pudding, stewed red cabbage compote with a Courvoisier & orange jus £11.95, Chef’s slow cooked beef brisket on a bed of bobotie with confit onions & red wine & Madeira jus £12.95, and finally my choice (pictured) Slow cooked lambs breast with white truffle mash & a minted jus £11.95. I found the lamb very tender but for my taste the sauce was too strong and rather overpowered the flavour of the lamb. The others enjoyed their choices and we were delighted to be reminded of babotie, a South African dish we hadn’t heard of or tasted for years. No puds, we were too full as the main course portions were very generous but for your info they were priced at £4.50. We finished with coffees.
There is a large outside area for al fresco dining on summer days and a smaller restaurant area that can be used for private functions.
The décor is charming and the service is very good so once they get the heating cranked up and a lighter touch with the sauces we feel The Tollhouse will be very successful.
