LWL Silver Award - Awarded August 2007 - Cost ££££££

As The Peat Spade has been taken over by chefs Andrew Clark and Lucy Townsend formerly of among other places Hotel Du Vin in Winchester we felt a new review was in order and as Longstock is such a pretty village it is always worth a visit.

When the four of us arrived we found it very busy, what a good sign!  We discovered they only have 13 tables so we recommend booking.  The decor is traditional country pub, very cosy, not a lot of room to hang out at the bar so we went straight to our table.  On their web site they say "the bar and restaurant areas feature cane fly rods, mounted trout, reels, gilt framed mirrors, period shooting and fishing prints, old books and games", in fact there is so much to look at it took us sometime to decide what we were going to eat.

What a refreshing change to encounter young staff whose menu knowledge was so impressive; they answered every query with enthusiasm.  Another plus, our G&T's were correctly served and the Pinot Grigio we chose to accompany our meal was very pleasant.

We loved the Hovis tin, a novel bread container!  Our starter choices were Warm pig's head terrine with crispy pig's ears, Soft herring roes, capers, parsley, toast, Potted duck, pickled cherries, toasted sourdough, Vine ripened tomato salad, olives and Boccocini.  Mains, Sausages and mustard mash with shallot jus (one of the daily specials, there were 3 sausages ..oops I ate one before I remembered to take the picture!), Rainbow trout, samphire shrimps, the other daily special Fish pie, Barnsley chop, broad beans, anchovy butter.

We all enjoyed our choices though we felt the fish pie could have done with less mash and a lot more fish!  Vegetables or salads are charged for as side orders.  We decided to share one pud, Chocolate brownie, cherries, pistachio ice cream.  Very yummy!  Three of us had coffee.

The Peat Spade is a lovely old pub with a very friendly atmosphere, a venue for a special treat.
