We arranged to meet friends at Petworth House an impressive National Trust location &, as it only took us an hour to get there from Southampton, thoroughly recommend it for a day out.  It took us about 2 hours to go around the house.  The surrounding areas of Petworth & Midhurst are very quaint, wish we had had time to explore further.  Now that we have discovered the wonderful Horse Guards Inn we all decided we would like to spend a weekend there, if their accommodation is as good as their food it should be very comfortable!

The interior is very cosy & oldie worlde, we had a lovely table in quite a private area & as we had a lot of catching up with our friends to do it was ideal.  I would recommend booking as they are very busy.  Apparently the new owners have only been there for 6 months, they are certainly creating delicious things in the kitchen.  All the staff are very friendly.

We were starving so SM & I thoroughly enjoyed our massive portions of melt in the mouth Calves Liver w/sauté potatoes & crispy bacon.  The Rib Eye Steaks were tender & cooked to perfection; Pasta shells w/brie, spinach & sun dried tomatoes, much enjoyed; Salmon w/leek & lemon thyme risotto was yummy!  The puddings were all absolutely delicious, we had them (warm chocolate brownie, sticky toffee pudding & my favourite, apple & hazelnut crumble) & coffees in the garden to appease the smokers & it was beautifully sunny day so a shame to waste it.  2 bottles of wine & some drinks to start with, well sight seeing is thirsty work!

After lunch we went back to walk around the grounds of Petworth House to try & undo some of our over eating sins!  The drive back is stunning, lovely views of England's green & pleasant land!
