Revisited November 2005

The Hobler has been taken over by the www.alcatraz.co.uk group & is now a very smart wine bar, a different look than on our last visit!  It wasn't very busy & was rather chilly though I would imagine that if it was crowded it would be a different matter.  Lots of different areas so you could get very private dining when its not busy.

The reason for our lunch was to meet Sarah the creator of Milford-on-Sea Online us web masters have to stick together!

The full menu for The Hobler is on their website but even though they have some interesting choices plus a specials board we all only chose one course.

From the Specials menu Quesadillas Sherpa pie ( Shepherds pie with attitude!) Steak & Ale pudding Burritos, again from the Specials menu, definitely of a Mexican persuasion today.

None of us were madly impressed with our food, it was just OK but loved the sauté potatoes & the very reasonably priced house white!  Staff were friendly.

The best part of the lunch for me was when we met one of our site regulars, she had noticed SM's car with our LWL address on it in the car park & so introduced herself, it is such a thrill to know we have fans out there!

We finished with coffees.

The Hobler have introduced a Ladies Coffee morning on Wednesdays from 8.30am-11.00am.

A very enjoyable Sunday lunch was spent by 6 people at this unspoilt, oldie worldy pub near Lymington.  A table booking is essential as it is only small.  In fact our table was in the Gun Room - for smokers - which is very small, but good if you want privacy for any reason!!

We started a tab at the bar and one orders the food there and it is waitress served.  No menus, just a large chalk board with a good variety.  Only one had a starter - fish soup -creamy but not very fishy, but excellent small round brown loaf of bread served on a plank with butter.

Our 6 main courses were 3 shoulders of lamb - tons of meat - served with new potatoes, cauliflower, broccoli and carrots. £9.95 each.  1 Salmon supreme - large portion on bed of salad £10.95. Nicely served and tasty;  1 Boar steak - good meat in a very spicy sauce £10.95 and lastly a Bouillabaisse served with bread and salad, again £10.95.  Nice consistency but not fishy enough for me.

All puddings were £4.95 and because the main portions were large only 4 were tempted.   3 hot chocolate fudge cake and 1 bread and butter pud all with ice cream - all very yummy and good size portions.  Only 3 coffees which were served with mints.  Three bottles of house wine at £11.95 each plus mineral water and 1 beer the total bill was £130.25

Cost with tip  £ £ £ £ £

We all agreed on the Yummy Factor of 7/10

Reported by SM.

PS  Interesting loos - Gents trough is full of coins for you to you know what over!!  And Ladies has a large & blurry mirror that makes you look like you've got acne!!

The higher the "Yummy" factor, the better the food & service.  The higher the number of £ signs the more expensive.  ( Roughly one £ sign = £5 per head )
