Revisited March 2009

We enjoyed a pleasant evening at Hobbits.

The scallop starters (£6.95) served on celeriac mash with crispy bacon were delicious as was the breaded brie (£5.95), both good size portions.  For my main course I chose pheasant breast stuffed with Gorgonzola (£13.95) very tasty but slightly dry. We had two portions of lamb rump from the main menu, very well cooked and tender and the final choice, local venison and fois gras from the specials board (£15.95); this was also tender and cooked to perfection.  We were served plenty of fresh carrots, broccoli and parsnips and we chose Dauphinoise potatoes which were creamy and delicious.  We finished our meal with coffees.

The staff were young and friendly but need more training.  I thought the food good value for money.  The cost of just over £30 a head included pre dinner drinks, a bottle of Rioja Crianza and a couple of liquors.

This was another of those "lets try it - it's only £5" !!  Thanks to the Telegraph tokens we decided to give it a go and take our husbands out for a snack.  Being a first class cook myself my husband wasn't very thrilled with his meal (guess he's spoilt!).  He felt the vegetables undercooked and the potatoes had been reheated. His chicken with a bacon wrap looked freshly cooked and the my salmon was good. The pate we chose for a starter was rather bland.

In my opinion this bar/restaurant is probably more fun at night as in daylight it looks a little tired and rather dark interior. As for the food it was OK and perhaps not a true example of their regular menu.

The higher the "Yummy" factor, the better the food & service.  The higher the number of £ signs the more expensive.  ( Roughly one £ sign = £5 per head )
