We recently spent a weekend in
Guernsey, flying from Southampton Airport with Flybe, arriving Friday
evening, staying at the above hotel which we can now highly recommend. The
Hotel is situated above the town of St. Peter Port, giving us a fabulous
panoramic view of the Port and the sea beyond. Our Bedroom, No 407, was vast
and very well appointed, as were all the others. As we were a party of 12
and therefore not easy to accommodate in restaurants with no booking we had
arranged our first evening meal at the hotel.
We all agreed and we are a
fussy lot, it was a really good choice! We stuck to the Table d'hote
Menu - 4 courses with coffee and mints for £19.95. The food was to a very
high standard, well presented and served, and excellent value for money.
The breakfast for the 3
mornings we stayed was buffet style but the hot food was cooked to order.
Yummy bacon, sausages and fluffy scrambled eggs. The poached haddock with a
poached egg on top was scrummy! Our wonderful Restaurant Manager, Olga from
Madeira, always checked we were happy with everything. We all agreed,
having stayed in many hotels around the world, that Olga and her restaurant
staff were very well trained and attentive as were the rest of the staff in
the hotel. Full Marks to Stephen Purtill (General Manager). Our tariff was
£49.50 per head B & B so excellent value!
Other Restaurants we
visited over the weekend were as follows -
Sunday Lunch -
Crabby
Jack's, west of the island, overlooking Vazon Bay
Monday Lunch -
The Boathouse, North Esplanade, St. Peter Port (opposite the
Information Centre)
We enjoyed all of the above
lunchtime venues as we were able to sit outside in the sunshine! Overall
the food was good, our only complaint, in Crabby Jack's the crab baguettes
and cocktail were a bit short on crab! Whereas I chose a crab salad and it
was huge! The Saturday Night venue Christies was very busy, the bar area
was packed, fortunately we had booked as we were 12 far too many dishes to
describe to you! All was good and a great evening was had by all!!
Needless to say copious amounts of wine and G&T's were consumed over the
weekend, at such reasonable prices it was compulsory! Tip for the gin
drinkers, we bought 2 litre bottles of Gordon's Export for £15 on the plane
on the way home!!!
For those who have not visited
Guernsey before, it is a lovely unspoilt island, not as commercialised as
Jersey. Great shopping, VAT free and only 60p bus fare to go around the
whole island. We bought a pass that covered several journeys and was
excellent value. The Duke of Richmond Hotel made the weekend for us all,
plus we were lucky with the weather of course!!
