Visited July 2007

On a recent warm July evening we dined in the marquee which has been erected whilst an extension is being added to the Brasserie Restaurant of this Hotel.  The George is a delightful old building and well worth reading all about it on their website.

They advertise that where possible they use organic and local produce. Menus are seasonal, and fish features regularly on the menu.  You can also read on the web site about what sounds like a wonderful service and especially useful for yachties, the new George at Home range for you to take home, heat and eat!

We both chose fish and shell fish soup with rouille and gruyere cheese which was delicious.  We had a glass of white wine and then moved on to a Pinot Noir.  I chose the most expensive meal on the menu - rib of beef on the bone with béarnaise sauce at £23.50.  It really was the best beef I have tasted for a very long time, beautifully cooked and served with delicious home made chips.  The other main course choice was new season lamb confit, new potatoes, shallot puree and pea shoots at £17.95.  We ordered a side dish of mixed organic vegetables which we found slightly under cooked for our taste.  The portions were very generous and apart from the vegetables was a lovely meal.  We were so full after our delicious meal that we had no pudding or coffee.
