El Sabio opened its doors just a few months ago,
formerly called the Mash Tun Pub. After an extensive makeover it is up to
date with attractive decor and also an outside terrace beside the river. I
was a little let down by the loos as they were not up to my usual standard.
A few extra frills would not go amiss.
The lunchtime menu is mainly Tapas which we chose (any
three dishes for £7.99) vegetarian Paella, Tortilla Espanola, Pollo al
Ajillo (chicken in wine & garlic), plus an extra mixed leaf salad. With
a fairly small meal we enjoyed a large bottle of wine, Bobal Cabernet Rosado
@ £11. Whilst sampling the wine we were served mixed olives and French bread
with olive oil which was over priced at £3.95 and £2.05. I had thought they
were complimentary! My suggestion is to charge less and serve less as
there were far too many olives for the two of us. How good it would feel if
they had brought the wine and a few olives to nibble on whilst we waited for
our Tapas. Wishful thinking?
All in all the company of a dear friend was better then
the food. The best dish was the Paella. I will give it another go but next
time I will select a different combination.
