Visit by CJ & SM to Calahonda, Costa del Sol, Spain Feb/March 2005 |
We flew from Southampton & can once again recommend flybe, we are lucky to have such a great airline/airport on our doorstep.
We found our accommodation on www.daltonsholidays.com Ad. No. 11755. It was a lovely little 2 bed terrace house, left one on left hand pic, on the sea front at Calahonda. We would re-visit because of it's position, see pic on right taken from upstairs bedroom window, it also has all mod cons including heating/aircon, & a pool on the complex. You could always get in touch with the owner direct, Gerry Loughran email:gerryloughran84@hotmail.com |
Calahonda is only about 45 mins from Malaga airport towards Marbella. There are lots of bars, restaurants & 2 good supermarkets within walking distance. As usual we hired our car from CarJet, very reasonable rates. We used to spend a lot of time in this part of Spain as our parents used to live down here many years ago. My memories of visiting them are full of eating at wonderful & reasonably priced Spanish restaurants, sadly they are now few & far between. I love calamari but even over here I kept being served frozen rubber rings, yuk! Obviously many are catering for what they think tourists want i.e. fry-ups & masses of Indian & Chinese restaurants, but we did find some goodies. Afraid its just trial & error as there are just so many places to choose from. Our advice, try a restaurant that has a lot of Spanish customers!

Merendero Cristina is on the beach at Rancho Park, Marbella. The nearest landmark is The Don Carlos Hotel (the skyscraper behind the pic of the restaurant). We used to head for Marbella from Calahonda along the N340 & take the exit for Elviria Beach. We parked at the beach & turning left walked along it to this restaurant. It was a good distance for working up an appetite! Reasonable food, excellent location. On the same beach but not quite so far along was Los Tony where we ordered bocquerones & a "Los Tony" Salad. Again, the best thing was location. |

The Italian Factory is a tiny little restaurant right in the heart of The Carihuela which is on the West of Torremolinos. Didn't expect much but we were tired, having had a very long walk, but it was fabulous, great house white & the best pizzas, very thin & crispy, highly recommended! El Olivo is a very sophisticated restaurant, only open in the evening, upstairs in Calahonda Centro Comercial. Excellent food & service. Lovely candle lit atmosphere. About £30 a head but we had a lot of vino. Booking advised as very busy. |

This was
definitely our favourite find, we enjoyed Los Naufragos so much we came
back 3 times! It was right on the front in Fuengirola & not the sort
of area you'd expect to find somewhere of this caliber. The Paseo
Maritimo is a great place for walking & people watching. It's
one of the most highly populated tourist areas & this restaurant doesn't
really look any different from all the others but we chose it because it
was full of Spaniards & we could see the fish they were eating.
Service is wonderful & our waiter spoke excellent English. He showed
us the catch of the day & you are charged by weight (of the fish not
us!). On one occasion it was Dorado & on another Sea Bass,
served with salad & chips & cost about €20 but enormous
portions! We also had on one visit
a Paella which I love & this was really special. I also enjoyed
freshly cooked & tender calamari & my partner had his beloved
bocquerones, my mouth is watering seeing these pictures again AND we had
sun AND a really excellent Torres. If you are ever in the area do
try it, (its near the large Peseta sculpture) & please tell them we
recommended you. Av. Cost €20
