We decided an exotic location was just what we needed to liven two of us up on a dull January day; Coco Rio certainly fits the bill! The "rustic African" decor is warm and welcoming and the menu certainly unusual. It boasts "the finest fresh cuisine from Cape to Rio, inventive dishes with an Afro-Latino twist". I am not going to argue with that and there are certainly some exotic sounding dishes on offer that I have never encountered before. At lunch time they offer 3 Soul Food Bowls for £6.95 and extra bowls at £2.50 each.

We had 7 between us so we could taste all but two of the selection. On left: Malawi spiced chicken skewers with a macadamia satay, Garlic baked flat mushroom with tomato and mozzarella, Roasted red pepper rice. On right: Kumara Koshery a sweet potato and coconut curry (my favourite!), Sweet potato mash, Mozambique chicken curry and Avocado with roasted poblano chillies and pine kernals. A novel idea and great to share. We washed all these wonderful flavours down with a bottle of their palatable house white, South African Kumala. View the menus on their web site. |

Of course we had to try the puds, our choices, on right: Brioche Bread and Butter Pudding with layers of apples sautéed in brown sugar and cinnamon served with warm vanilla custard. On left: Baked Banoffee Cheesecake with fresh banana and toffee sauce... very yummy! Coco Rio is a family affair; the chef is Ian, son of Debbie & step son of Martin, he is talented young man! Martin provides the live music, which is on every night. I am sure the night time atmosphere must be wonderful, this is a fun venue for a party. There are several special event evenings coming up, check out the What's On page on their site for details. We wish them well in their new venture, they have certainly brought a very unusual restaurant to Southampton, it is a treat to find somewhere different!

PS A friend visited a couple of nights after we were there; she thoroughly enjoyed the music as well as the food!
