Visited March 2007

Four of us met up here for an early supper on a beautiful Spring (Saturday) evening.

We were keen to try the venue out for ourselves, having read a variety of reviews since its recent renaissance from the former “The Clump”. Pleased to report that we were favourably impressed.

The interior is modern and stylish, with the dining area covering two areas - some tables are in the cosy pub with others in the light and airy conservatory where we sat, looking out on to the attractive patio and garden. The atmosphere was gently relaxed in the early evening with an increasing buzz as the restaurant filled up – all those around us seemed to be having a good time, as we were!

The menu is interesting and different, comprising of 6 sections:

·          Sharing Plates - e.g. “Spanish Tapas” and “Greek Mezze”

·          Little Dishes – e.g. Grilled Sardines+Bruschetta+Roasted Tomato Salsa

·          Leaves - e.g. Crispy Duck+Watercress+Mouli +Onion+Plum Sauce

·          Fired Pizzas – e.g. Spiced Chicken+Peppadew Peppers+Chilli+Tabasco

·          Pastas – e.g. Noodles+Salmon+Prawn+Coconut+Chilli

·          Stove/Grill/Rotisserie - e.g. Lamb Rump+Chorizo Mash+Peas+Onions+Mint Jelly

This format enables each diner to mix and match to their hearts content – be warned though, the wide range of appetising choices makes choosing far from easy! Daily Specials are also available.

Onion Tart

Beetroot Cured Salmon

Bread and Butter Pudding

All our food was of excellent quality served by a team of young, friendly, efficient staff.

Particular highlights were the Butternut Squash Soup, Onion Tart+Cashel Blue+Rocket,

Crab Cakes+Mango+Chilli+Coriander, Beetroot Cured Salmon+Crème Fraiche+Lemon,

Risotto of the Day and Spit Chicken+Lemon+Garlic Confit+Belgium Frites.

We all managed to squeeze down a delicious pud as well, including those of the Sticky Toffee and Bread and Butter variety!

We went light on the alcohol (for a change!), although there is a good range of Wines and Continental Beers to suit all palates/occasions. One slight downside was our inability to savour the meal over a coffee (and “stickies”) as we were required to clear our table for the second sitting and there were no lounge chairs available in the bar area.

Overall though, we found The Chilworth Arms a very positive experience. The styling, menu and pricing are all aiming for the upper end of the market but at £25 per head we considered the evening good value for money, and will certainly return….maybe to sample the Summer alfresco offering next time.

Cost £££££ - no wine or coffee.

Yummy Factor 8/10 – (erring on the side of caution)

Guest Report by RM and his gang of lads and lassies who lunch!

The higher the "Yummy" factor, the better the food & service.  The higher the number of £ signs the more expensive.  ( Roughly one £ sign = £5 per head )
