The Chesil Rectory is a wonderful venue being a charming 15th Century building with low ceilings, old beams and a cosy feel. Upstairs there is a private dining area seating 12 and in the downstairs lounge one can sip pre dinner drinks whilst selecting from the fine menu of great British classical dishes.

Hot off the press, two of us visited to review this very recently reopened historic Grade 1 listed restaurant.  The new owners are a group of friends with a passion for food and wine who have teamed up to bring their considerable experience to launch their vision of a British eaterie.  (You can read all about them on their website).  All are stakeholders in the restaurant showing a genuine commitment to the family style business.   The Chesil Rectory has had a sympathetic to the era refurbishment with some very dramatic antique chandeliers but as its over 30 years since I was last here its impossible to remember what it used to be like.  But I didn't forget the very low ceilings and beams, tall people remember to duck!

There are two menus to choose from - The daily specials £14.95 for two courses, £19.95 for three courses, plus a more extensive regular menu with a good selection of favourites. Prices rage from £4 - £7 for starters  and £12.50 - £15 for main courses.

Our choices were: L-R  Chicken Liver parfait, pear chutney and toast,  Tart Fine with creamed leeks and wild mushrooms,   Followed by: Pan Fried Hake, casserole of lentils, autumn roots and curly kale,  "The Chesil Hotpot" - slow cooked shoulder of lamb, bakers potatoes and red cabbage.    The dishes, though smallish portions, were all well presented.

And finally: Bakewell tart and coffees.  We enjoyed a delicious bottle of Chateau Ollieux Corbieres Rose @ £17.95.  A very novel idea, all wines are priced at £10 on top of regular shop prices (so the better the wine the better the deal).

We were impressed with the quality of the food and the good service from the friendly staff, all keen to help make our lunch an enjoyable occasion. We wish them well with their new venture and hope you will agree it is a charming place for a cosy lunch or dinner.
